.KEY MESSAGES...
* Gusty southwest winds and increased fire danger expected through
Tuesday.
&&
.DISCUSSION...through Saturday.
As the lead shortwave within the western US trough lifts
northeast today, winds weaken slightly and become more focused
along/southeast of I-15. Tomorrow, the next shortwave moves into
the region and brings a renewed shot of gusty southwest winds.
Like today, the wind emphasis on Tuesday shifts mainly into
northwestern Arizona. The main concerns with the winds each day
are the increased fired danger (discussed in the Fire Weather
section below) and periodic lake/boating impacts. Best chances
(70%) for the latter are on Monday when a Lake Wind Advisory is in
effect for Lake Mead and Lake Mohave. By mid/late week, ensemble
guidance has the parent trough lifting and weakening, leading to
height rises and the return of zonal flow. At the surface, this
translates to lighter breezes and warming temperatures. Expect a
transition from seasonable temperatures to highs 6-10 degrees
above normal. Precipitation chances remain below 10% across the
area throughout the forecast period.
&&
.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 00Z Forecast Package...
Breezy southwest winds to persist through around 02z-04z with
gusts 20-30 knots. Winds will decrease overnight generally 10-15
knots or less, and may become more southeasterly toward sunrise.
by 15z-17z, however, winds will shift back to the south/southwest
and increase with gusts 20-25 knots. High temperatures today and
tomorrow to hover just below 100 degrees.
For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 00Z Forecast Package...KBIH will remain a
bit of an outlier with winds remaining 10 knots or less and
shifting from the south during the day to the northwest by 03z.
Elsewhere, west to southwest winds will persist. Wind gusts of
20-30 knots to continue into early evening before decreasing
overnight. The one exception will be KDAG, which will see gusty
winds persist into the overnight hours. Winds will pick up again
after sunrise, mainlining a south/southwest direction.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...Strongest winds and critical fire weather conditions
become focused in northwestern AZ today. A Red Flag Warning is in
effect until 11PM this evening for AZ101, AZ102, and NV466 fire
weather zones. Southwest winds of 15-25 mph and gusts around 35
mph are expected in this area, with lighter breezes to the west.
More widespread gusty conditions likely on Monday, resulting in
the upgrade to a Red Flag Warning across northwestern AZ and most
of southern NV. Winds have trended lower across southern NV on
Tuesday, and thus the Fire Weather Watch has been cancelled for
these zones. However, winds look sufficient across northwestern AZ
on Tuesday, so the watch has been upgraded to a Red Flag Warning
for Tuesday as well. Afternoon RH values are forecast to be 5-15%
through Tuesday with poor overnight recoveries.
&&
.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report
any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating
procedures.
